CAPE TOWN - Crime statistics for the third quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year show there has been a reduction in crime in the Western Cape.

Western Cape Police Commissioner Thembesile Patekile and the MEC for Community Safety, Anroux Marais, announced the statistics on Tuesday.

Patekile said that 15 of the 17 community crimes in the province had shown a reduction.

Crime statistics for the third quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year show that murder decreased by 7.9% in the Western Cape.

Statistics for sexual offences, assault, and robbery also show a reduction for the period from 1 October to 31 December 2024.  

"Common assault and commercial crimes showed an increase - that's the only two crimes that have shown an increase, while murders and attempted murders were significantly decreased under the period of review," said Patekile.  

Patekile said that police were doing a good job, but there was still a lot of work to be done.
