CAPE TOWN - Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane says she's concerned about the state in which the students are currently living.

She’s on an oversight visit to institutions of higher learning in Cape Town to assess the situation at campuses.

Her visit comes after student protests at various universities across the country.

Nkabane spoke to journalists at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology campus on Tuesday.

"I thought I must come today and assess the situation myself and I was very disturbed to see the conditions in which our students are living, because here at CPUT they are utilizing the student centre as the place where they sleep, and they sleep on the floor."

Nkabane announced plans to assist about 80 CPUT students who haven't been given accommodation yet.

"As a temporary measure, because we could see that the environment is not conducive for our students, I have taken a decision that we need to move them out today to a temporary student accommodation support system which will be conducive for both learning and living so that they are going to wake up in the morning and prepare for their academic classes."
