JOHANNESBURG - The man arrested in connection with the torture of patrons at Zanzou nightclub in Pretoria claims he has been “tortured” by police officers.

His legal team made these remarks during his first appearance at the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Monday afternoon.

He was arrested by Johannesburg Metro Police last week for his alleged involvement in the torture of patrons at the nightclub.

The media has been prohibited from filming or naming him because an identity parade is yet to be conducted.

Wearing a face mask with arms crossed and head bowed, the man accused of torturing patrons at Zanzou entered the dock to a courtroom filled with angry members of the public.

He stood behind his legal team, who quickly informed the magistrate that their client had been tortured by police officers.

The man is seeking medical attention, saying that he is experiencing severe physical pain.

His legal team claims he was denied treatment, as the bruises from the alleged torture are not visible to the naked eye.

He is set to return to court on Monday next week for a formal bail application.
