The Competition Commission’s Media and Digital Platforms Market Inquiry's provisional report has found that Google needs to pay local media houses.
It says Google will need to pay between R300 – R500 million per year over the next three to five years to make up for lost revenue.
Google reportedly receives between R800 to R900 million from South African news content.
However, the search engine allegedly destroys millions of rands of potential revenue for our media houses.
Linley says Google was an active participant during the inquiry process but are pushing for a much lower pay out.
