JOHANNESBURG - As the nation contends with indefinite stage 4 power cuts Eskom says the recovery of several of its units is progressing well.

The power utility was downscaled from stage 6 load shedding earlier on Monday, owing to the successful recovery of five units at Majuba, two units at Camden and one unit at Medupi at the weekend.

Speaking in a briefing on Sunday, Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said South Africans only need to brace themselves for power cuts until the end of the week.

Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena said planned maintenance currently stands at more than 7,000 megawatts.

"Additionally, emergency reserves replenishment is progressing well. The return of these units comes after identifying the root causes of multiple unit trips, which were unconnected and purely technical in nature, related to electrical and control system issues in auxiliary parts of these power stations."
