JOHANNESBURG - All eyes are on the City of Ekurhuleni this week as it prepares for its first motion of no confidence of 2025, this time targeting Speaker of Council, Nthabiseng Tshivhenga.

Tshivhenga is under fire once again due to her alleged failure to ensure council meetings remain free from political infighting and physical altercations.

She is set to face the motion of no confidence on Thursday.

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), which wants Tshivhenga out of office, said the council has been riddled with unnecessary squabbles under her custodianship.

The IFP has criticised Tshivhenga for failing to take action after councillors were assaulted during formal sittings under her custodianship.

The party argues that her failure to maintain order and decorum in council meetings makes her unfit to lead the legislative arm of one of Gauteng’s top municipalities.

Tshivhenga, an Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillor, previously survived a no-confidence vote, staying in office thanks to the backing of the EFF and African National Congress (ANC).

She has held the position of speaker of the Ekurhuleni council for exactly two years, but political parties will decide this week if she should remain in the role.
