DURBAN - Five suspected robbers have been killed in a shootout with police in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
Officers said the group was planning to rob a business in Ntuzuma, north of Durban.
They opened fire when police approached them on Monday morning.
Community members said they woke up to loud gunshot sounds.
It’s believed the suspects who were planning the robbery had an altercation among themselves before police intervened.
Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said: “So police stumbled on an active crime scene amongst the suspects; they turned the focus to the police, shooting at the police. Police had to retaliate and during that shootout, 4 suspects were shot and fatally wounded with 3 firearms found in their possession.”
Police later recovered a fifth body believed to have fled the initial scene with gunshot wounds.
A search for more suspects is underway.
