JOHANNESBURG - Civic movement Save South Africa has started a fundraising campaign for postgraduate students at Wits University.

Its president, Sydney Monnakgotla, said the country’s job market required many to have postgraduate studies.

Following recent protests, the university amended its policies, allowing undergraduate students owing less than R150,000 to register, a significant change from the previous R15,000 limit.

Monnakgotla said this was not enough as it excluded postgraduate students wanting to study.

Save SA's spokesperson, Tebogo Mashilompane, said the movement’s president wants the university to amend its policies to accommodate postgraduate students.

"We cannot be a country that only produces students with junior degrees. We must go beyond that. The current economic setup and workplace demand more than just an NQF 7 [bachelor's degree or advanced diploma]."
