JOHANNESBURG - The vandalism of traffic lights continues to be a significant issue in Johannesburg, with efforts underway to tackle the problem.

Several major intersections in the metro have malfunctioning traffic lights, causing severe traffic congestion during peak hours.

Speaking at a media briefing on Friday, Joburg Mayor Dada Morero assured residents that the city had not overlooked the issue of faulty traffic lights.

"In the meantime, while we are restoring traffic lights, JMPD deployed pointsmen to ensure that traffic flows. So, there are interventions that we need to do but we must also indicate that traffic signals have become one of our biggest problems. We are focusing on it. Much of it is a problem of vandalism," said Morero.
