JOHANNESBURG - Major steel producer ArcelorMittal South Africa, has given an ultimatum to stakeholders, threatening to shut down operations despite reports of a potential R1 billion rescue plan from government to save its operations.
Since 2023, the company has expressed its challenges, including electricity tariffs and import tariffs on steel.
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) expressed disappointment that the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition failed to send a representative to receive a memorandum during a staged picket outside the IDC offices on Friday.
Deputy general secretary, Mbuso Ngubane: "DTIC, together with government, we want them to come forward and give us tangible solutions in terms of what it is that they are investing in the company back, so that the company can be able to continue its operations."
