CAPE TOWN - One of Khayelitsha's most feared criminals Yanga "Bara" Nyalara is believed to be one of seven suspects killed in a shootout with police in the Eastern Cape.

Seven suspects were shot dead near Butterworth on Thursday after police responded to a tip-off about two vehicles carrying firearms.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) says the shooting is being investigated.

A reliable source said Nyalara, an alleged Khayelitsha gang boss implicated in numerous crimes - including murders, extortion and robberies was shot dead in the Eastern Cape on Thursday.

IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping confirmed a case of "Death as a result of police action" is now being investigated. 

"The Butterworth police officers allegedly received a tip-off about two vehicles that were driving from Cofimvaba carrying firearms. A high-speed chase ensued on the n2 near Ndabakazi outside of Butterworth and both the police and the occupants of the two cars exchanged fire. Six suspects were allegedly fatally wounded."

Shuping said various firearms were also recovered at the scene.
