CAPE TOWN - Despite the widely reported shortage of trained dogs in the police’s K9 unit, it has claimed a number of successes.

Last week, the K9 unit assisted in nabbing criminals in at least three operations.

This week, police said an arrest made three years ago, with the help of Bessie from the dog unit, had led to successful prosecution.

Police spokesperson, Anelisiwe Manyana, said that Bessie sniffed out the narcotics hidden in a taxi travelling on the N7 highway during a traffic stop in September 2022.

"They requested the unidentified man to exit the vehicle with his bag, upon which they searched the contents in his presence, which resulted in the confiscation of 100 mandrax tablets and 37 grams of tik."
