CAPE TOWN - The National Shelter Movement of South Africa will be watching Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s Budget Speech closely on Wednesday afternoon.

Like many civil society organisations, it’s been calling on government to make money available to NGOs that provide communities with essential services.

The movement’s Nadia Munsamy said that shelters needed more funding.

"You need to come to the party and help us, you need to give more to the gender-based violence victims in your country, and only by donating more money to the shelters in South Africa, will we be able to try to minimise the scourge of gender-based violence in this country."

She added that staff at these shelters worked tirelessly and without proper pay.

"Places of safety have staff working below the minimum wage. We’re an NPO with minimum resources. We can't subsidise the staff, some working 24/7 and still being dedicated to helping victims."
