JOHANNESBURG - After experiencing significant strain, Johannesburg Water reports its infrastructure is now seeing a gradual improvement in its overall water supply system, with some areas experiencing full recovery.

The utility said that about 11 of its systems across the city had recovered, while a few other areas remained under strain.

It added this had led to reduced tower and reservoir levels which was causing low water pressure and, in some cases, a complete loss of supply.

Some recovered systems include Linden 2, Waterval, Quellerina, Kensington B, Helderkruin, Honeydew, Glenvista and Randpark Ridge after undergoing multiple maintenance shutdowns.

Spokesperson for Joburg Water, Nombuso Shabalala, said they were closely monitoring the systems which were still impacted and instances where no water was being supplied.

"And these include Crosby, Brixton, Hursthill, Crown Gardens, Eagles Nest, Berea, Forest Hill, Lenasia, South Hills and Parktown."

She added that technical teams from the bulk supplier Rand Water, together with Joburg Water, were working together to recover the affected systems.

Last week, Rand Water issued a warning to Joburg and Tshwane residents, urging them to reduce water consumption or face a total collapse of the system

Despite Rand Water operating at full capacity, it said that demand continued to beat supply, particularly in the two metros where consumption figures have been increasing slowly.
