A video circulating on social media shows how he was targeted in an apparent hit while in a vehicle.
Reports suggest that the cleric was to officiate at a wedding between a lesbian couple.
Fears of a regressing nation have gripped the country as tributes continue pouring in for the world’s first openly gay imam.
The SAHRC has shared in the concern expressed across various sectors that Hendricks may have been executed for his advocacy and support of the LGBTQI+ community.
The Chapter Nine institution said this highlighted the urgent need for the full and effective implementation of the Prevention and Combating of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Act.
It has also expressed concern at targeted violence against marginalised communities despite the strides the country has made in enshrining the right to equality and non-discrimination.
It said it would be monitoring investigations in line with its constitutional mandate to protect human rights and the Promotion of Equality and the Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act.
