JOHANNESBURG - The PSL's big three were kept apart from playing each other in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals in the draw for the final eight that was held on Monday night.
Defending champions Orlando Pirates advanced to this stage with a superb 3-1 against Baroka FC and will continue their pursuit of a third successive Nedbank Cup title with a home game against Supersport United. Coach Gavin Hunt’s side made heavy weather of their round of 16 match as they needed extra time to beat Motsepe Foundation Championship side Cape Town Spurs 2-1. Pirates and United have already played each other in a cup competition this season, where the Buccaneers prevailed 3-1 in the MTN8 quarterfinals on their way to winning their way to lifting the trophy.
"It’s a difficult draw for us but we knew there is no easy team in the last eight. We’ve played SuperSport twice this season already and we managed to beat them twice, but we know this one is going to be a completely different ball game. I think the boys will be ready and the coaches as well. We’ll prepare well and work hard for this game and hopefully go all the way in the Nedbank Cup and defend our title," said Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa.
Betway Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns have been drawn into the palaver involving Royal AM. The KZN outfit is currently under SARS curatorship and is unable to play its round of 32 match with Milford FC, where the winner of that match would proceed to play Sekhukhune United in the last 16. Sundowns will host the winner of the game between either Royal AM or Milford against Sekhukhune.
Kaizer Chiefs have been in terrific form in this competition and are yet to concede a goal, having beaten Free Agents FC 4-0 and Chippa United 3-0 in their games thus far. Amakhosi, who are aiming to avoid completing 10 seasons without a trophy, will travel to the Western Cape to play Stellenbosch FC. Chiefs have the upper hand in meetings between the two clubs, having won five of their last six matches as well, recently completing the double in the league over Stellies in the last month.
"It’s a tricky draw but a very good game of football awaiting the fans. For us, it’s about staying true to our process and focusing on what we need to do. Hopefully, we’ll come out of the Cape with a win," said Kaizer Chiefs fullback Dillan Solomon.
The remaining game in the round is between the league leaders in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, Durban City, and Marumo Gallants.
The quarterfinal matchups will take place in the second week of March 2025, with kick-off times, venues, and broadcast details to be confirmed by the PSL.
