Modack denies hiring self-confessed hitman to commit murders on his behalf

CAPE TOWN - Alleged underworld gang boss, Nafiz Modack on Tuesday denied hiring a self-confessed hitman to commit murders on his behalf.

Modack and fourteen co-accused,  face 122 charges for various crimes, including the murder of top cop Charl Kinnear.

Modack has denied instructing a state witness, who can only be identified as Mr A - to murder former Hawks officer Nico Heerschap, tow truck driver Richard Joseph, defence attorney William Booth and alleged underworld figure, Andre Naude.

Mr A previously testified he was recruited to murder the four men on behalf of Modack.

In his testimony, he detailed how five of the co-accused helped him murder Heerschap's father in a botched hit in Melkbostrand in 2019.

Mr A went on to testify how co-accused, Zyaad Poole told him to murder Joseph, Booth and Naude on behalf of Modack.

While Mr A's attempts to murder Booth and Naude were unsuccessful, Modack denied giving any instructions to have them murdered.

Modack said he had no reason to murder Naude.

Naude is allegedly an associate of alleged underworld figures Jerome "Donkie" Booysen and the now-deceased Mark Lifman, who was shot dead recently in George.

Mr A admitted to firing several shots at Naude's home in Bellville on 6 September 2019.

Modack says he knew of Naude because he was in charge of security at Cape Town's nightclubs between 2012 and 2017.

The trial continues.
