CAPE TOWN - Alleged underworld gang boss, Nafiz Modack, on Monday denied giving co-accused Zane Kilian instructions to ping slain top cop Charl Kinnear on the day of his murder.

Modack and 14 co-accused are on trial for a slew of charges related to allegedly operating a criminal empire.

Modack has been in the dock since last week to account for the 122 charges he faces.

On Monday, Modack told the court that he hired Kilian specifically to track the whereabouts of his alleged underworld rival Jerome "Donkie" Booysen, and Kinnear to check when they were together.

Modack previously told the court, via his attorney Bashier Sibda, that he believed the two men were plotting to have him killed and he wanted to avoid them.

Judge Robert Henney clarified Modack's instructions to Kilian on Monday.

"So you gave a general instruction?"

"That's right, my lord," Modack responded.

"You gave a general instruction... Please see where Colonel Kinnear finds himself?" Judge Henney asked.

"That's right, my lord," was Modack's response.

"And in what proximity he is to Mister Booysen?" the judge wanted to know.

"That's right, my lord," said Modack.

"And that was a general instruction? Here's R10,000 or R15,000 for you to do that," probed the judge.

"That's right, my lord," Modack responded.

Modack is set to continue his testimony on Tuesday.
