CAPE TOWN - Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has asked Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana to prioritise funding for cities in his Budget Speech, so they can deliver well-located affordable housing.

Godongwana is expected to deliver the Budget Speech on Wednesday and indicate where the money will be allocated for certain government priorities.

Hill-Lewis said that Cape Town could accelerate affordable housing construction across various projects for which they'd already released land.

"This includes over 4,000 units in the inner city alone."

Hill-Lewis has further called for no cuts to pro-poor grant funding to municipalities and provinces.

"And for Cape Town to get its fair share of national funding based on updated census figures showing that we are about to or already have overtaken Johannesburg as South Africa's most populous city of more than 5 million residents."
