Zanzou management has denied that the men were being attacked for failing to clear their bill but claimed they were accused of stealing mobile phones.

Police said the men opened the case on Monday night after a video of the attack was widely circulated on social media.

A group of young men appeared visibly terrified, and their faces bruised as they stood naked, enduring torture by bouncers at Zanzou nightclub.

They desperately begged for forgiveness while their faces were covered with wet cloths, obstructing their ability to breathe.

Police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, said these young men were exposed to barbaric, degrading, and inhumane torture.

"The actions depicted in the video also contravene the POPI [Protection of Personal Information] Act, in which they displayed and distributed the faces and bodily features of the victims. Witnesses and those who have knowledge of the incident are also encouraged to come forward to assist police investigations."

It is alleged that the patrons were being tortured for owing the establishment.

This has sparked public outrage, with many on social media calling for the popular nightclub to close its doors for good.

Those with knowledge of the incident have been asked to come forward with information.

National Police Commissioner Fanie Masemola has also called for the suspects to be traced and has assured the public that the law will take its course.
