JOHANNESBURG - Women's health activist Nokumuka Dube is embarking on a campaign to combat period poverty through donations.

Period poverty refers to the lack of access to menstrual products, affecting one in 10 girls in the Global South.

Dube said she will be hiking across the country, collecting reusable pads and menstrual cups to donate to underprivileged learners.

She was speaking at the launch of the ShePowHer campaign in Johannesburg on Friday, which aims to provide long-term solutions for menstrual health.

Dube said her campaign also seeks to educate learners about menstrual health.

“This is more sustainable as opposed to something that only lasts one or two cycles, so it's long term and it can get the girls through high school. We are also trying to encourage conversation.

“I was sad to learn that some girls don't know where the blood comes from, so we are having a conversation because it's a taboo subject that needs to be tackled.”
