The summit’s theme in 2025 focuses on "Justice for Africans and People of African Descent".
Scores of dignitaries and heads of state from across the continent have gathered at the AU headquarters in Ethiopia for the two-day summit.
During the opening ceremony, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took to the stage to call upon Africans to unify in collaborative efforts to seek peace during these challenging times.
Ahmed emphasised that 2025’s theme implores African leaders to focus on healing historical scars.
“This moment calls upon us to strengthen our collective resolve, embrace resilience, and foster unity across Africa. The theme for this year's assembly calls on us to heal the scars of historical injustice and overcome lingering trauma that has long hindered our progress.”
He added that this work is not just about charity or financial aid but a call for justice.
