DURBAN - The Durban taxi driver seen on a video circulating online being assaulted by metro police officers has been arrested.

Newly recruited officers are seen assaulting the taxi driver who appears to be harmless and defenceless.

They further forcefully dragged him out of his minibus taxi.

But, the Durban metro police claims the driver was in the wrong.

Durban metro police spokesperson Boysie Zungu has come to the defence of their officers.

He says force was necessary to arrest the taxi driver.

"The driver of a minibus stopped in the middle of the intersection. The police officer went to prosecute him, but the driver drove off whilst being prosecuted. The member managed to pull the key out. The driver then jumped out and assaulted the member and backup arrived instantly. He was arrested and charged at Durban Central SAPS."
