JOHANNESBURG - The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) said that the families of the 14 South African peacekeepers who died in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) would not be left high and dry following the tragic loss of their loved ones.

The troops lost their lives in January in Goma amid intense fighting between the M23 rebels and Congolese forces.

They were part of a contingent of soldiers from African states deployed to help defend the DRC against M23 rebels.

All 14 of the fallen soldiers were remembered at a memorial service in Tshwane on Thursday night, where they were reunited with their loved ones for the first time since the mission began in December 2023.

The chaplain-general of the SANDF, Thabo Masweu, said the families would be taken care of.

"All the soldiers and their children will be taken to school. It doesn’t matter if it's from creche, preschool, whatever, to tertiary until they graduate and go and find work."
