CAPE TOWN - Alleged underworld gang boss Nafiz Modack said he plotted to prove that retired Major-General Jeremy Vearey and slain top cop, Charl Kinnear, were corrupt.

Modack is testifying to account for the 122 charges he faces in a high-profile trial, along with 14 other co-accused.

The accused allegedly committed various crimes related to operating a criminal empire, including the murder of Kinnear.

Modack on Thursday told the court that Vearey and Kinnear wanted to be paid to return nine firearms seized from his home in 2019.

Modack said he plotted to catch the cops red-handed with the help of a Crime Intelligence officer, Captain Alfred Barker.

He told the court that the plan was for Barker to arrest Kinnear when he came to collect a payment of R40,000 in cash from a middleman, Mohamed Hanware.

Modack said after Barker failed to arrest Kinnear, the cops began asking for more money via Hanware or they would have Modack killed.

Modack said he believed Hanware because he told him about shootings on alleged underworld gang boss, Jerome "Donkie" Booysen, and the murder of Rashied Staggie a day before the incidents happened.
