JOHANNESBURG - The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) says inclement weather has contributed greatly to delays in restoring Lilian Ngoyi Street in the city centre.

Joburg council speaker Nobuhle Mthembu led an oversight visit on the street on Friday and assessed the progress of repair work.

The popular street in the CBD was damaged almost 20 months ago after a gas explosion that rocked the CBD.

The street is a long stretch of barricades, excavators and construction crews.

Repairs to the destroyed street have been delayed largely due to disputes between the city and a previous contractor.

JRA project manager Jeff Maluleke said the new contractor, Korone Engineers had made some progress, however, recent rainfall had contributed to added delays

“You can see now with weather it's difficult to work.”

He said they were still working on phase one of the project which should be completed by August
