Witnesses to testify in political murder case of ANC councillor Siyabonga Mkhize

DURBAN - The murder case of slain African National Congress (ANC) councillor, Siyabonga Mkhize, is set to proceed on Thursday.

Mkhize was an eThekwini Municipality councillor for Ward 101, Cato Crest, in Durban when he was shot and killed alongside Mzukisi Nyanga, an ANC activist, back in October 2021.

Five men, including his predecessor Muzimuni Mnguni, are facing murder charges linked to the pair's deadly shooting.

The State will on Thursday lead with evidence from witnesses.

Lead State prosecutor, advocate Lawrence Gcaba, will on Thursday call witnesses to testify in the political murder case.

However, for their safety, witnesses will take the stand in-camera.

Nkosinathi Ngcobo, Sandile Msizi, Ngiba, Sifiso Mlondo, and Phathesakhe Ngiba are accused of killing the pair before the 2021 local government polls.

During a by-election campaign, months after Mkhize was murdered, Ngiba campaigned in Cato Crest, heavily guarded by men armed with machine guns.

Witnesses are expected to reveal some of the information surrounding the murder case.

The case is among those probed by the political task force established to investigate politically motivated murders in KwaZulu-Natal.
