JOHANNESBURG - The remains of 14 South African soldiers who died in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have arrived at the Swartkop Air Force Base in Centurion.

The 14 troops were killed during a conflict between the DRC army forces and the M23 rebels last month while deployed on a multinational peacekeeping mission.

Their remains are set to be handed over to family during a memorial service where President Cyril Ramaphosa is also expected to attend.

They are expected to make their way from the mortuary to Hanger 4 at the Swartkop Air Force Base where their coffins will then be draped in national colours.

The remains will remain in the Hanger until proceedings begin.

President Cyril Ramaphosa - commander in chief of the army - will be part of the ceremonial handover after wrapping up proceedings in parliament on Thursday afternoon.

Ramaphosa is expected to address the sombre gathering, attended by the grieving families and other dignitaries including Defence Minister Angie Motshekga.

Staff Sergeant Willian Cola, Corporal Matome Malesa, Lance Bombardier Itumeleng Moreo, Lance Corporal Tseke Molapo and Rifleman Peter Strydom are among the troops being remembered this evening.

Family members from Limpopo, Free State, North West and the Northern Cape will also be in attendance at the country’s oldest airforce base.
