JOHANNESBURG - Deputy Minister in the Presidency Nonceba Mhlauli said there was still a long road ahead before youth unemployment becomes a thing of the past.

She made the remarks during a media briefing on Wednesday, where she highlighted the achievements of the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI).

Mhlauli said that over 53,000 young people benefited from the initiative between October and December of 2023.  

While acknowledging that the unemployment rate continued to be a concern, Mhlauli emphasised that efforts were underway to tackle the crisis.

"While we celebrate these achievements, we remain acutely aware of the work that still lies ahead. Our focus remains on scaling impactful programmes, securing sustainable funding, and deepening strategic partnerships.  

"The road to eradicating youth unemployment is not a short one, but through continued collaboration and commitment, we will continue to break barriers and create real, lasting change."
