CAPE TOWN - Alleged underworld gang boss, Nafiz Modack alleges he paid former retired Major-General Jeremy Vearey up to R3 million because he feared Vearey wanted him dead.

Modack is testifying on Thursday to answer for the charges of corruption, and bribery he faces.

The accused, along with 14 others faces 122 charges for various crimes related to running a criminal enterprise.

Modack continued telling the court about how a former associate, Mohamed Hanware played middleman to pay Vearey vast sums of money.

Modack claims Hanware played middleman in a failed attempt to trap Vearey for corruption.

He told the court he gave Hanware R40,000 after Vearey allegedly agreed to take the money for the return of nine firearms seized from Modack's home.

Modack said the plan to arrest Vearey didn't succeed when criminal intelligence officers failed to arrest him when he collected the money from Hanware.

He told the court he continued to pay Hanware after he convinced Modack that Vearey had put out a hit on him.

Vearey has denied receiving any money from Modack while Hanware admitted he pocketed the money because Modack allegedly owed him more than R1 million.

Modack questioned on his association with one of his co-accused

Modack said he started associating with one of his co-accused because he believed she was an attorney who could help him with legal matters.

Modack and co-accused Amaal Jantjies face several charges of conspiracy to commit murder for allegedly plotting three botched attacks on Lieutenant Charl Kinnear in 2019.

Modack said he started liaising with Jantjies telephonically after being introduced to her by a mutual associate.

He said he was told Jantjies could help secure bail for one of his family members arrested by the Anti-Gang Unit in October 2019.

Modack said Jantjies made him believe she was an attorney who had links to the unit.

The trial continues on Monday.
