JOHANNESBURG - Long, winding queues of South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grant recipients have formed outside Alberton Shopping Centre as beneficiaries flock to update their cards.

Last week, Postbank and SASSA announced 28 February as the deadline for beneficiaries to update their SASSA gold Cards to the new PostBank Black cards.

According to beneficiaries, Alberton Shopping Centre is the only local centre where Postbank officials are updating cards.

Some of the grant beneficiaries said they were back for the fourth time on Thursday but are still waiting outside the centre to be assisted.

"I was here this morning and I was waiting here and they say to me I must come tomorrow," said one of the beneficiaries.

Only 4 Postbank officials are working to service hundreds of people.

Beneficiaries are given a number in the queue and Postbank said they can only service 150 people a day.

"They say I must come and pick a number for tomorrow. We are old people. I'm suffering from lupus and we must wait here."

They are worried that come the deadline they will not be able to receive their payments.
