CAPE TOWN - The Constitutional Court will on Thursday hear an application to stop the extradition of a former South African teacher accused of sexual abuse in the UK.
Last year, Justice Minister Thambo Simelane approved Iain Wares’ extradition to Scotland to face charges of sexual abuse.
The Western Cape High Court also approved the extradition.
Eighty-five-year-old Wares has approached the Constitutional Court to try and overturn a high court order granting his extradition to Scotland to face three of the seven charges raised in South Africa.
He is being accused by sexually and physically abusing scores of boys during his time as a teacher in Scotland in the 60s and 70s.
Wares is also facing similar charges in South Africa and he's on trial at the Wynberg Magistrates Court.
UK authorities first applied for Wares' extradition in 2018, which led to his arrest in 2019 on charges of libidinous, lewd and indecent practices and behaviour.
The South African justice ministry has indicated that it will oppose any attempt by Wares to appeal his extradition.
