JOHANNESBURG - ActionSA is demanding accountability from Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa and Eskom chairperson, Mteto Nyati, on the utility's deteriorating state.
During a recent sitting of Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA), the auditor-general confirmed the utility's primary energy costs could be significantly lower.
The party's Alan Beesley said that the cost of electricity had skyrocketed while service delivery had deteriorated.
"It is quite clear that corruption and incompetence is continuing unabated at Eskom. Electricity tariffs will be significantly lower if it wasn't for the corruption and incompetence that has been happening at Eskom."
Beesley added that people responsible for the problems must be held accountable and called on Eskom to be more transparent with the public.
"As ActionSA, we are firm in our view if you are a corrupt state official, you must be criminally charged and if you are an incompetent state official, you must be fired."
