CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier has asked for patience as the department works to find schools for unplaced learners in the province.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has revealed that 1,586 grade 1 and grade 8 learners are yet to be placed at a school in 2025.

The department said despite the budget cuts, it had added seven new schools to accommodate learners looking for school placement in the province.

Three more new schools are scheduled for completion in March.

Maynier said they were doing all that they could to place all the learners at schools soon.

"Basic education is the vital foundation upon which our children’s post-school education and employment relies [on]. So, we deeply appreciate the hard work and long hours that our districts and infrastructure officials have done to expand access to education in the Western Cape."
