DURBAN - The newly elected African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) leadership in KwaZulu-Natal admits it has a tough task to help the party regain lost ground in the province.

As political parties gear up for the 2026 local government elections, the league said a lot needed to be done.

The ANC suffered a blow in the 2021 local polls and the 2024 general polls, as it lost more voter support in the province.

For the first time since 2017, the ANCYL in KwaZulu-Natal has finally elected new leadership after some previous attempts failed.

The new structure comes at a time when the party in the province faces a reconfiguration as a result of the decline in electoral support.

The youth league’s chairperson, Ntokozo Ngcobo, said their main priority was to gain voter confidence.

"We do have a serious responsibility as the youth league. You’ll know that a number of voters in this province are young people, so it means the youth league provincial leadership has a responsibility in going across the province and making sure that young people do trust the ANC and ANCYL again."

Ngcobo said the new structure would also hold the party in the province accountable on a range of issues that affect young people.
