CAPE TOWN - Good Party secretary-general Brett Herron has refuted claims that he and a group of housing activists invaded the highly contested Tafelberg school site, in Cape Town, over the weekend.
Herron, African National Congress (ANC) provincial leader, Khalid Sayed, and a group of housing activists marched to the site on Saturday.
Herron said a meeting was called at the Sea Point Methodist Church to inform housing activists of the Constitutional Court arguments that would be made on Tuesday.
It was also to discuss the latest, vague, announcement by the Western Cape Government about the future of the Tafelberg site.
Herron said as part of the proceedings, they marched from the Church to the school site where a short Khoikhoi ceremony was conducted.
He said the statement by Infrastructure MEC Tertuis Simmers, which alleges that they intended or attempted to invade and occupy the site, was false.
"Simmers has invoked the use of 'unlawful invasions' and 'attempted occupation' to demonise a peaceful and legitimate march for the right to housing, including the right to housing in well-located areas."
