The DA says that ‘no government in a democratic country should be given such sweeping powers to expropriate property without compensation’.

John Perlman interviews Helen Zille, Chairperson of the Federal Council of the Democratic Alliance (DA).
Listen below:
The DA has filed papers in the High Court to challenge the recently signed Expropriation Act, arguing that it is substantively and procedurally unconstitutional.
This move comes after President Donald Trump froze US aid to South Africa, citing that the law allows land to be seized from white farmers.
Zille argues that the Act, in its current form, 'opens the door to everything that President Trump was saying'.
However, she says that where Trump went wrong was in his belief that this is currently happening.
She emphasises that unless the DA intervenes to stop this Act, South Africa’s interests – across all races and for all its people – along with its international standing, will be 'severely' compromised.
"It's our duty to prevent this from becoming a reality."
