JOHANNESBURG - African National Congress (ANC) veteran Frank Chikane says South Africa's strained diplomatic ties with the United States highlight the long road ahead in liberating certain parts of the world from oppressive mindsets.

Chikane made these remarks while commenting on former US President Donald Trump's decision to freeze aid to South Africa due to his perception of the Expropriation Act.

He made these remarks at the Namibian Embassy in Pretoria on Tuesday afternoon, where the ANC honoured Namibia’s founding president, Sam Nujoma.

There is a common view among most political parties that US President Donald Trump is imposing sanctions on South Africa based on his misunderstanding of the Expropriation Act.

Frank Chikane, Chairperson of the ANC Integrity Commission, has voiced these sentiments, emphasising that it shows how much more work remains before total liberation is reached.

"With the president leaving, what happening now is an indication that the struggle is not over. If anything, this should remind us to start where we ended."

The South African government has also said it's concerning that the US failed to recognise the country’s painful history of colonialism and apartheid.
