JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) is scheduled to visit the Namibian Embassy in Pretoria to pay respects to the late president Sam Nujoma.

Nujoma died last week after being hospitalised for three weeks due to an illness.

ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula will lay a wreath at the embassy this afternoon to honour what his party describes as a towering figure in the African liberation struggle.

The ANC will observe a moment of silence at the Namibian High Commission in remembrance of the country’s former president Nujoma.

The party said Nujoma's contributions to Namibia's fight for independence and the broader liberation of southern Africa will always be remembered.

The ANC also highlights the late Namibian president was a strong ally to South African freedom fighters during the struggle against apartheid.

It said the wreath-laying ceremony is a way to express gratitude for all Nujoma did for the Namibian people and for Africa as a whole.

Mbalula and his deputy Nomvula Mokonyane will lead the wreath-laying ceremony.
