CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Education Department has said it has yet to place more than 1,500 learners at a school in the province.
The department is briefing the provincial standing committee on education on the department’s state of readiness for the 2025 school year.
The department stated that it received more than 33,000 applications for Grade 1 and more 99,000 for Grade 8.

The department adds that it also received nine thousand 289 extremely late applications for grade 1 and 8.
However, the department’s head of education Brent Walter said they are in a good position to place all learners at a school.
“For grade 1 and 8 we have placed 99 percent of the learners. The challenges that we've seen comes from parents who want specific places for their children, and we don't have specific places, some areas are oversubscribed," said Walter.
