CAPE TOWN - The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has condemned an arson attack at the troubled Nyanga taxi rank.

At least 16 minibus taxis were damaged in Sunday night's fire.

While the taxi rank remains open for commuters, police are on high alert.

SANTACO Western Cape said it would now request a meeting with the executive of the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA).

Meanwhile, the police's Novela Potelwa said that additional police were deployed to the Nyanga taxi rank.

"Western Cape police are investigating a case of arson after a number of minibus taxis were set alight at the Nyanga taxi rank. The incident prompted the deployment of additional forces to the area to restore calm. In total, 16 minibus taxis were damaged."

Chaos erupted at the same taxi rank in January when one person was killed and several others were wounded in a shooting.

Eighteen people were arrested in connection with that attack.
