Bongani Bingwa interviews Dr Naledi Pandor, former Minister of International Relations.

AfriForum and the Solidarity Movement have distanced themselves from claims that white South Africans are suffering a genocide, rejecting US President Donald Trump's offer of refuge in the United States.

In a joint media briefing on Saturday, AfriForum and the Solidarity trade union made it clear that white Afrikaners are not fleeing South Africa.

They emphasised that the future of Afrikaners remains in Africa, particularly in South Africa.

Naledi Pandor says that AfriForum cannot shy away from the allegations they've made.

"I don't think they can walk it back. They must live up to the misinformation that they provided about our country.

Pandor believes this is an opportunity for South Africa to correct the record, emphasising that the country has been misrepresented and hasn't done enough to communicate the facts.

She stresses that South Africa should not passively accept the current narrative.

The government, Pandor argues, has several ways to counter these claims, including:

  • Becoming more visible on the global stage
  • Communicating the facts clearly
  • Encouraging a broader range of social actors, beyond the government, to participate in this communication effort
  • Engaging more actively in the economic space, as it has the greatest potential to influence perceptions and outcomes
"There's a great deal of work that needs to be done."

"I believe there are actions that can be taken, and I'm sure that our government will act."
