CAPE TOWN - President Cyril Ramaphosa says he wants to deal with the United States (US) and the Donald Trump administration formally, with no public spats.

Ramaphosa said the US is an important player on the global stage and a very important trading partner.

Ramaphosa made the remarks during the Presidential Golf Challenge in Cape Town on Friday.

The Trump administration has been highly critical of South Africa because of the Expropriation Act, saying it won't attend the G20 summit in Johannesburg.

“So, we intend to deal with them in a formal way and proper engagement. I said that I’m sending a delegation to the world, to our own continent, to Europe, to the Americas, and to Asia, the Middle East, to go and explain our position, particularly our G20 objectives.”

Ramaphosa also won’t be engaging in any mudslinging with his Rwandan counterpart, Paul Kagame, who accused him of lying about the death of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

“As head of state, I’m not in the habit of getting into the mud and arguing with other people and other heads of state.”
