CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) said while the actions of bullies were unacceptable, those who shared, liked, or commented on the content were similarly shameful.

This came after a video of a group attacking a girl from Lotus High School in Grassy Park went viral.

The school principal has confirmed that all pupils involved have been suspended.

The clip shows a group of pupils assaulting the girl, and it has been shared widely on social media platforms.

Police confirmed the incident and said it reportedly occurred just after 3pm in the afternoon in Ottery.

WCED’s Bronagh Hammond said they had written to the Information Regulator and also lodged a complaint against the WhatsApp channel that was sharing the clip.

"We also call on any person who comes across a channel promoting such content to report it to the relevant social media service provider."

Meanwhile, the pupils from Lotus High who were involved in the incident will attend disciplinary hearings on Saturday.
