CAPE TOWN - Political parties have shared mixed views on President Cyril Ramaphosa's pledge to invest nearly a trillion rand in infrastructure development.

During his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday night, Ramaphosa announced that R940 billion would be allocated to infrastructure over the next three years.

But some parties said this was a substantial amount to invest in a short period.

While some political parties have supported Ramaphosa’s plan to invest R940 billion in infrastructure, others argued that he needed to adopt a more realistic approach.

Makashule Gana, chief organiser of RISE Mzansi, believes that a public-private partnership will be essential to fulfil this commitment.

"What it needs is all those that care about the development of this country to work together to realise the aspirations that the president tabled."

Although the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP)’s Les Govender praised the president’s ambitious nature, he questioned how the country could afford to spend R940 billion on infrastructure over just three years.

"Indeed, it’s a lot of money, but where the president fell short is he didn’t say where the money is going to come from."

Ramaphosa said the R940 billion would go towards building bridges, dams, and other critical infrastructure.
