CAPE TOWN - A farmer arrested for the distribution of expired food has been granted bail of R8,000 in the Secunda Magistrates Court.
The 30-year-old allegedly collected food from different chain stores in Mpumalanga under the pretense of feeding it to his animals.
The Mpumalanga branch of the Hawks said Govern Mbeki Local Municipality Health inspectors visited the suspect's farm on Wednesday and found two warehouses packed with expired foodstuffs.
The food included expired canned products, rotten chicken, and red meat.
More than 1,000 crates were loaded with dairy products, such as cheese.
The Hawks said repackaging equipment, including pricing machine and stickers, were also found.
Seven freezers were discovered with repackaged wheat, flower, and maize meal.
The suspect will be back in court on 27 March.
