JOHANNESBURG - Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has commended the swift arrest of two police officers accused of assaulting a woman at a police station in Bloemfontein.
Last month - a woman approached the Heidedal Police Station for assistance after her boyfriend allegedly violated a protection order.
It is alleged that the two officers instead assaulted the 40-year-old woman following a disagreement inside the station.
The constable and sergeant were arrested after a video of the assault was shared on social media.
Mchunu says actions that betray officers' responsibility to the public will be met with the full might of the law.
"Having issued a statement condemning the actions of the police officers, Ministers Mchunu welcomed the arrest and maintained that any form of misconduct or abuse of power within the South African Police Service would not be tolerated. Law enforcement are entrusted with upholding the law and protecting the rights of citizens," said spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi.
