JOHANNESBURG - Nombasa Tsengwa said she resigned as Exxaro CEO due to damaging allegations against her.
Tsengwa quit her top job at the mining company this week as it investigates allegations related to governance issues.
She resigned with immediate effect.
Tsengwa was placed on precautionary suspension in 2024 after Sunday Times published claims by anonymous sources that allege that she had bullied and intimidated staff.
She was blamed for the exodus of several executives from the company.
At the start of the week, the CEO’s attempt to overturn her suspension failed when the court ruled the matter lacked urgency.
Tsengwa’s legal setback was followed by another blow when Exxaro issued her with a charge sheet, where she was accused of conflict of interest and breach of duty of good faith.
In a statement on Thursday, the company also confirmed Tsengwa’s resignation from the board.
Finance director, Riaan Koppeschaar, will remain as acting CEO until a new head has been appointed.
