Police say more than 5,000 illicit tobacco products were found after a number of shops were searched.

CAPE TOWN - Western Cape police have confiscated illegal tobacco products valued at just over R250,000.

Members attached to the Provincial Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Policing Team and the Anti-Economic Crimes team carried out the operation in Bellville on Wednesday.

Police said more than 5,000 illicit tobacco products were found after several shops were searched.

Police spokesperson Anelisiwe Manyana said two suspects were arrested and would appear in court soon. 

"Two male foreign nationals aged 24 and 44 were arrested and detained at Bellville SAPS [ South African Police Service]. They are due to appear in the Bellville Magistrates Court under the Tobacco Products Control Act of 1993 once charged."
