CAPE TOWN - There’s been a call for peace in Goma a city in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s east.

Rwandan-backed rebel group M23 and the DRC military have been engaged in a decade-long conflict.

On Wednesday, an influential group of youth and faith leaders gathered at St George's Cathedral in Cape Town to call for an end to the war.

They’ve launched the #GomaCallForPeace campaign.

Archbishop Thabo Makgoba is standing in solidarity with the people of the DRC and has backed the campaign to end the conflict there.

The campaign appeals for the cessation of hostilities in the country and for the international community to take immediate action to promote peace.

Makgoba says the church must start actively doing more to show their support for the citizens of the DRC.

“We need to move from finding ways and finding prayers into action and I hope, taking a stand and signing #GomaCallForPeace may we grant such a stand.”

He adds that the situation in the DRC is an escalating humanitarian crisis that requires the attention of global citizens and leaders.
